Originally in 1751 the theater was built on another place. In 1822 architects put the first stone of the theater on his current place.

The theater begun in 1825. In 1943, a bomb completely destroyed the theater and in 1951 the theater was rebuilt and inaugurated with a performance of Richard Wagner. It is the principal venue in Aachen for operas, musical theater, plays and concerts.
